Quick answer: Udyam registration is the government’s free online registration for micro, small and medium businesses (MSMEs). A food stall, tiffin service, cloud kitchen or restaurant can register on udyamregistration.gov.in in about 30 minutes with an Aadhaar number and PAN. It costs ₹0. It does not replace your FSSAI registration, but it makes loans, government schemes and some subsidies easier to get.
Most small food businesses don’t need Udyam on day one. It becomes useful the moment you want a bank loan, a government scheme, or a stronger position when bigger clients (offices, caterers, institutions) pay you late.
What it costs
Cost of registering
- Government fee
- ₹0
- Aadhaar and PAN (already have)
- ₹0
- Bank account details
- ₹0
- Your time
- ≈30 min
Watch out for look-alike websites. Several private sites copy the government design and charge ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 for “Udyam registration”. The real portal is free. Check the address bar says udyamregistration.gov.in before you type your Aadhaar number.
Which category your business falls in
Udyam puts every business in one of three groups, based on investment in plant and machinery (your kitchen equipment, vehicle and fit-out) and yearly turnover. Almost every stall, home kitchen and small restaurant is micro.
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
What Udyam does for a food business
- Easier bank loans: banks treat MSME loans as priority lending, and Udyam is the usual proof. It helps with Mudra and other working-capital loans.
- Collateral-free loans: loans up to ₹10 crore can be covered by the government’s credit guarantee scheme for micro and small enterprises (CGTMSE), which asks for Udyam.
- Government schemes: subsidies, state food processing schemes and training programmes usually ask for the Udyam number.
- Protection against late payment: if you supply food to a company, office canteen or institution, the MSME law says buyers must pay micro and small suppliers within 15 days, or within an agreed time of at most 45 days. Late payers owe interest at three times the RBI bank rate.
- Tenders and trade: some government and corporate catering tenders give preference to registered MSMEs.
What it doesn’t do: Udyam is not a food licence and not a tax registration. You still need FSSAI registration, and GST if your turnover crosses the limit (see GST for food businesses).
Step-by-step registration
- Open the official portal
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose “For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME”.
- Verify your Aadhaar
Enter the owner’s Aadhaar number and name exactly as on the card, then the OTP sent to the linked mobile.
- Choose the business type and verify PAN
Proprietorship for most stalls and home kitchens. The PAN is checked automatically.
- Fill in the business details
Business name, address of the kitchen or stall, bank account and IFSC, date you started, and number of employees.
- Pick your activity code
Choose “Services” and search for restaurant or food service. Most food businesses fall in group 561 (for example 56101, restaurants without a bar). Only add activities you actually do.
- Enter investment and turnover
The portal fills these from your income tax and GST records where it can. New businesses enter their own figures.
- Submit and save the certificate
Enter the final OTP. Your Udyam number appears at once, and the certificate is emailed to you. Save the PDF.
GST isn’t compulsory for Udyam unless your business is required to register for GST. No PAN yet? Very small informal businesses can get an Udyam Assist certificate through a bank, NBFC or other designated agency on the Udyam Assist Platform run by SIDBI. Banks treat it like a Udyam certificate for priority lending.
Costing example: does it pay off?
Udyam doesn’t change your daily profit directly. It pays off when you borrow. Say a kachori stall owner wants ₹2 lakh for a second cart. Without business records and registration, many owners end up borrowing from moneylenders or on personal credit cards at very high rates. With Udyam, a year of UPI sales and FSSAI registration, the same owner can apply for a Mudra loan from a bank at a much lower rate. On ₹2 lakh, a difference of even 15 percentage points is about ₹30,000 a year in interest saved. Read how to start a kachori stall for a full stall budget.
